The style of photography was dictated by the 4"x5" plate camera that I used. It is ritualistic in function and there are many corrections that must be made before a photograph can be taken. The process of focusing the lens whilst hidden beneath a dark cloth and then locking the camera standards after the pose has been approved is time consuming. The fighter must wait, motionless, until the shutter has been released - and I thank my subjects for their patience. The slow nature of this process shapes the style of the poses and eliminates unnecessary and unwanted spontaneity.
The fighters' masks are fascinating subjects, and the design of their outfits can be, perhaps, as complex and sophisticated as couture. The costumes and personal beliefs of the luchador create an enigma that provides insight into the disparate, converging forces that shape life in Mexico.
Through a succession of striking
photographs Venville has managed to
capture an insight into the unique and
compelling world of a Luchador.
